Be Prepared - Before You Go to the Pawnee Grasslands

Spring flowers and temperatures are best in May and June. Snow can arrive in summer ad temperatures can drop fifty degrees in a single day. Weather is unpredictable on the Pawnee National Grassland. Be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms, lightening, torrential rains, flash floods and high winds that can sweep through on a summer afternoon.

Check a map and know the roads that require a high clearance or four wheel drive vehicles.  Roads may be impassable when wet or snow covered. 

If caught in a lightening storm, quickly retreat to your vehicle.

Summer temperatures can easily climb above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, leading to heat exhaustion. Carry extra water and protect yourself from the intense sun with a hat, long sleeves, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Amenities for water, food and fuel are limited. There are no gas stations on the Pawnee National Grassland.

Please stay off private property and avoid hunting or target shooting activities you may observe. Two-thirds of the land within the grassland boundaries are private property. Please respect private lands, gates, fences, stock tanks, windmills and other federal and private property.

Dispersed camping access applies only to the national grassland lands managed by the US Forest Service. US Forest Service maps are recommended to help you locate public lands. Maps are sold at Forest Service offices and some area businesses.

Be aware of rattlesnakes year round.  It may not be crickets you hear! Have fun, but be careful out there!
