Welcome to the Pawnee National Grasslands

Hello and welcome to the Pawnee National Grassland! The Pawnee includes a low-lying region of the Colorado Piedmont where the South Platte River and its tributaries have eroded away significant amounts of the material common to the uppermost strata of the surrounding High Plains. The topography is complex and broken by gullies, bluffs, cliffs, hills and features such as lichen-covered sandstone and the dramatic, signature landmark of the Pawnee Buttes.

Spring is a great time to visit the Pawnee, with wildflowers, along with mild temperatures in May and June. Weather is unpredictable on the Pawnee National Grassland.

Check a map and know the roads that require a high clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles. Roads may be impassible when wet or snow-covered. Amenities for water, food and fuel are limited. There are no gas stations on the Pawnee National Grassland.

Two-thirds of the land within the grassland boundaries is private property. Please respect private lands, gates, fences, stock tanks, windmills and other property.
