106. Colorado River

Flock of white pelicans on Grand Lake
White pelicans arrive in April to the Grand Valley
Moose crossing the water channel close to buildings.
Moose are a common site near the water.

Take the left fork to drive to the lakes shore. Looking north you can see the high mountains of Rocky Mountain National Park and the islands just to the northeast. The river is the main fork of the Colorado. The small islands where the river enters the reservoir is part of the delta formed over the last 60 years as the river carried silt from the mountains and deposited that silt at the mouth of the river. Barely above the surface of the lake, the islands are ideal resting spots for American white pelicans, geese and ducks. Take advantage of the picnic tables in the trees between the parking loop and the river.
