Understanding National Forest System Lands

National forest lands are highly diverse -- both in terms of landscapes and multiple uses that take place upon them. They are sources of drinking water, wood and other products, wildlife habitat and scenic backdrops. Hiking, biking, hunting, target shooting, camping, picnicking, river rafting, wildlife viewing and scenic driving are just a few of the recreation activities you may see in action. You can also expect to see active tree cutting to reduce the risk from wildfire; logging trucks; signs of oil and gas and other energy and mineral development, cattle grazing and other uses on these lands.
