Fire Management: Campfire K-P-A

Before you build a campfire, you must be knowledgeable, prepared, and aware. 

Knowledgeable: know the safe campfire construction procedure. Only build a campfire if there is no fire ban in effect. Build fires in established fire rings or in accordance to Leave No Trace principles. Only use wood smaller than your arm, and keep the flames lower than 18 inches. 

Prepared: Have at least 5 gallons of water as well as a shovel with a 5-foot handle on hand in order to build, contain, and put out the fire. To put out the fire properly, poor enough water on the ashes that they are no longer warm to the touch. 

Aware: Be aware of the environmental conditions. Always keep safety as a priority.
