503. Hewlett Gulch

If you came to this area 300 years ago, you might have followed the natural contours of this gulch to travel north from the rugged Poudre Canyon. This trail along the twisting Gordon Creek is thought to have originally been part of the Ute Trail, one of many mountain passages used by early Native American tribes.

These days, Hewlett Gulch is a popular hiking trail that affords visitors the chance to splash through numerous small creek crossings as they pass through meadow lands, forests, and a miniature canyon. It's also a wonderful place to see a landscape recovering from wildfire. 2012's Hewlett and High Park fires both burned through this area, leaving unmistakable fire scars but paving the way for new growth and regeneration.
