415. Historic Echo Lake Campground

Echo Lake Springhouse
In the 1930's spring houses were constructed to provide water for thirsty travelers. Like many others that were built along the roadway, these have all disappeared from Mt Evans road. Only one remains located on the west of of Road 103 in Idaho Springs.

The Echo Lake Campground was the focal point of Civilian Conservation Corp activity from Camp F-58-C for many of its early years. In September of 1936, side camps were established at Echo Lake and Squaw Mountain in order to reconstruct the 1928 highway built by the Bureau of Public Roads, including the addition of picnic grounds along the route, and the construction of the Echo Lake Campground. By 1937 the Echo Lake Shelter House had been constructed.
